Welcome
to Dr. Donald Macintosh Flather's original oil paintings website.
Donald
Flather was a very talented man who combined his love of the outdoors
with his love of art to produce many beautiful artworks from all
across Canada and parts of the USA. Donald was a self taught Artist
whom first began painting at a young age on pieces of glass. During
his lifetime, he produced over of 400 paintings, which included
stunning Canadian landscapes from Coast to Coast, as well as plants
and animals. Although a teacher by vocation, he dedicated a great
deal of his life (circa 1919-1987) to his painting and developed
his own unique style, which combines elements of French Impressionism
and the Group of Seven.
Donald
Flather was a colleague of Lawren Harris, founder of the Group
of Seven and the two men worked together for several years on
the Executive of the Federation of Canadian Artists, of which
Donald was an original and founding member in 1941. Read

Weathered

Description:
|
This
landscape painting of Donald Flather is quite interesting
as it may be the original version of this painting depicting
a beautiful gnarled Pine tree above the CPR rail tracks
on the side of Skaha Lake. Donald painted several other
versions of this iconic old tree in various sizes including
with much bolder use of colour. As those other paintings
were labelled to belong in Donald's "Okanagon Series",
this painting should also be included in the Okanagon
Series.
On the
back of the painting it reads in lightly applied pencil:
"Weathered
Pine of Skaha
Gnarled Pine
Lone Pine of Skaha
Sentinel
Gnarled Sentinel Pine"
This is evident to David Flather that Donald was pondering
the best title for this scene and as "Weathered
Pine of Skaha" is at the top of the list on the
backside and the other painting title's are very similar,
I believe that this is the title that he decided upon.
Unfortunately
this tree was eventually inadvertenly cut down by railway
maintenance staff.
